An Award Winning Brewery
The Hawke’s Beer and Leisure Centre is a one-of-a-kind brewery and taproom located in Sydney’s Inner West. Co-partnered with legendary former Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, the dream of owning a brewery became a reality for two fellow Australians. The family friendly venue serves tank-fresh Hawkes craft beers along with local wines, spirits and cocktails in four custom designed spaces. Uniquely the venue offers a public bar, mezzanine level bar, outdoor patio area, pool room, Bob Hawke photo and memorabilla gallery and fully licensed Lucky Prawn and Chinese-Australian bistro.
BSK Projects worked with Hawkes Brewing Co. from the initial stages of the venture providing project management and design management services. Given the location and space available there were some challenges to overcome during the project. The trickiest component was putting the brewery and associated high loads onto a mezzanine level ensuring it was structurally sound.
During the design phase, Benedikt’s architectural background was valuable in finalising plans for some of the tight spaces. The venue is also located in a flood zone that created its own set of restrictions, plus construction occurred during COVID lockdowns.
Clever planning saw the project delivered under two DAs, one for the Brewery and the second for the taproom. BSK’s experience also helped align the overall budget, manage the trade tenders and contracts, communicate all challenges and variations with key stakeholders, and keep all trades accountable. All in all, coordinating a smooth program.
The fun hands-on approach taken by BSK Projects lead to a strong working relationship and a brewery opening on time and to budget, plus a beer or two on opening day.
