Siamang Ape Facility
Western Plains Zoo
Dubbo
A project that helped save a species
Siamang Apes from Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula are endangered animals, so the Zoo’s breeding pair is extremely important for the survival of the species. (They’ve already had 5 offspring.)
The pair lives on an island enclosure, which to date has had no facility for isolating individual animals for routine health checks, any specific veterinary procedures or ongoing treatment that may be necessary, or breeding requirements – all important components of their care, given both apes are aging.
The client asked BSK Projects to construct an ‘off-island’ facility at the Siamang site for this purpose. The location of the facility would enable keepers to easily treat, train, condition and monitor the Siamang on a regular basis.
Our challenges included building the new facility over water, and once more working in a live environment where it was important to understand and allow for the animals’ needs, in keeping with DPI (Department of Primary Industries) requirements.
Our past experience in this field gave us a good feel for the nature of the beast, ensuring we delivered to brief and helped the conservation of an endangered species along the way.
